The submarine was built in 2004 by Wuchang Shipyard in Hubei Province.
The NATO code name is "Yuan".
The teardrop-shaped hull and bridge layout design of the “Yuan” class is heavily influenced by the Russian “Kilo” class. However, its main feature is two elevator wings designed on the main bridge.
The hull of the Yuan-class submarine is covered with a layer of rubber-like anti-sonar protective tiles.
The boat has six sets of 533 mm torpedo launch tubes (two top, four bottom) capable of firing wire-guided torpedoes manufactured in China or Russia.
In addition, YJ-82 anti-ship missiles can be fired with a range of 80 kilometers.
Its torpedo tube can also be used for minelaying and can carry 18 to 24 mines.
